On Monday the 25th of March, MyWorld Skills & Training team offered a dynamic hands-on one-day workshop for filming on a mobile phone. Held at the Merchant Venturers Building, the workshop aimed to equip attendees with essential skills to craft compelling video content, all with just a smartphone.
Tom Paul Martin led the course, an award-winning filmmaker, who has worked with numerous charities including British Red Cross and War Child UK. Participants, who predominantly came from community organisations (eg Creative Youth Network, Young Bristol, KWMC) delved into the nuances of digital filmmaking, from conceptualisation to postproduction.
Throughout the day, attendees learned how to create professional-grade videos on a limited budget, without compromising on quality. They subsequently learnt the basics of Davinci Resolve, a powerful editing software crucial for crafting polished films. The films they each produced were showcased at the end of the session. It was impressive to see what they had been able to produce in a short space of time using the skills and knowledge learned in the workshop. Tom’s expertise, gained from over a decade of directing TV commercials, music videos, and online content, provided invaluable guidance. The workshop catered to beginners and intermediate learners alike, ensuring accessibility for all who possess basic camera phone operation skills.
One attendee commented, ‘Tom was very knowledgeable and had good experience in the field. Now I understand more about how to use emotion to tell a brands story., something I hope will further my career’.
Another stated, “ I enjoyed getting involved in lots of practical work – got us all putting all the information into practice which was really useful!”
