Date: Aug 21, 2021

MyWorld are delighted to announce that the 5G Edge-XR project was recently crowned The Operator with the Best Industry Deployment at the UK 5G Week Awards. The ceremony backed by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, celebrated the ‘best of the best’ of 5G Adoption, Business Cases and Distribution from around the world.

The University of Bristol’s Visual Information Lab (VI-Lab), led by MyWorld Programme Director Professor David Bull and MyWorld collaborator Professor Andrew Calway, are valuable contributors to 5G Edge-XR, which is developing virtual and augmented reality experiences to complement BT Sport’s services

Led by BT Applied Research, 5G Edge-XR will bring immersive experiences to BT Sport viewers. Pulling the action out of their screens and into their rooms, viewers will be able to watch events from whatever angle, on whatever device.

The real-time service, funded under the 5G-Create programme, will combine cloud computing and 5G networks.

VI-Lab are working with Bristol start-up Condense Reality to introduce AI techniques to volumetric video compression and post-processing and so improve the efficiency of the encoding process.
